The interior of the island is characterised by rolling hills covered in macchia; grassland mingled with myrtle, wild thyme, prickly pears and dwarf oaks. The Gennargentu mountains contain a myriad of hidden villages untouched by time and history. In the north east the mountains fall away dramatically to the Costa Smerelda, Sardinia's most exclusive area where the rich and famous and the super rich and the infamous own properties and holiday on their yachts! Further south the shoreline around the Golfo di Orosei remains completely unspoilt.
