Description

This tour is a variation of several other tours plus a day at the excellent Oulton Park Gold Cup Historic Race Meeting. We feel that the Gold Cup meeting is very underrated and could be described as'‘the Goodwood of the North'. Therefore we have designed a couple of simple one-day tours with different starting points but both finishing close to Oulton Park to encourage people to make a weekend of it, but without the long motorway drag to Cheshire.

Provisional Itinerary

Day 1 - Sunday: The Bay Watch Tour
We start from our familiar base south of Kendal and follow the shores of the Kent Estuary, our first view of the bay. After a few miles we turn inland to avoid the towns of Carnforth and Lancaster but climb into the hills to the east where we still get panoramic views of the bay and beyond. Our route takes us along Oakenclough Fell, to the beauty spots of Beacon Fell and Longridge Fell. Here we desert the bay and head across to Pendle Hill on our way to the Lancashire Moors. We skirt the built up areas and head off across Saddleworth Moor for lunch at Holmfirth, location for the TV series 'Last of the Summer Wine'.

Gold Cup Tour 1:
The second part of our tour starts here where Yorkshire customers may prefer to join us as we set off south west across the Pennines via the Woodhead Pass to Glossop and on to the picturesque Goyt Valley. We climb up from the valley to the Cat and Fiddle Pass where we meet up with the cars on the southern version of the tour. From here it is all down hill! We descend from the Pennines to the Cheshire Plain to our hotel for the night.

Day 2 - Monday
A short run from the hotel to Oulton Park Race Circuit. We will organise entry tickets and we may have our own parking area near the actual circuit.

Gold Cup Tour 2:
The alternative version of the tour starts from the pretty village of Easenhall near Rugby and follows the route of our Spring Classic (excluding the visit to Donnington Park) to just outside Buxton where we detour to join 'version 1' at the Cat and Fiddle.
